A Review of JDate’s Redesign by Ali Sabet

27 01 2009

Branding and design specialist Ali Sabet just posted a review of JDate’s redesign. He also recently broke down the design of location based dating/social network Skout.

Having someone with Ali’s critical eye review your site (pre re-design) is tremendously helpful, especially for those of us that are too close to our product and who have developed a jaded eye looking at our site(s) day in and day out. We’ll be launching a redesign of our dating sites in the coming months; safe to say that it will definitely include a dose of input from Ali.

Congrats Star and Arman!

27 01 2009

A large part of the feel good aspect of running dating sites is the opportunity to help people meet their match. I love hearing success stories of couples that met online, and this one is especially sweet. Star (aka Setareh), who is my girlfriend’s little sister, met Arman a few years back on IranianPersonals.com (the same site where my girlfriend and I met). On a recent trip to Mexico, Arman popped the question *d’oh!*. A big congrats goes out to Star and Arman on their recent engagement!

JDate Redesign Coming Soon

20 01 2009

The undisputed heavyweight of niche dating sites is planning a redesign. JDate, owned by Spark Networks, utilizes two main platforms for their niche sites. Most of their sites, like BlackSingles.com, BBWPersonalsPlus.com, etc., are on a platform that was born from their acquisition of MingleMatch and have seen several design makeovers over the years.

As for JDate, a Spark executive once told me that they prefer the platform inherited from MingleMatch, but due to fear of customer backlash, they’ve been coy vis-a-vis redesigns to their bread winner. Suffice it to say, Spark has had little appetite for messing with JDate; until now that is. Curious to see the redesign and how bold it will be.

Radio Date™

19 01 2009

Congrats to Josh Meyers, Greg Kim, Daniel Chen and the rest of the team at PeopleMedia for landing a sweet biz dev deal with the syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show.

Local radio is huge for reaching African-American consumers and attracts some $805 million/year from marketers. According to ROI Media Soultions/Arbitron (2007), radio leads African Americans’ daily time spent with media.

Here’s how Radio Date™ works:

1. Sign Up
Create a Free Profile on BlackPeopleMeet.com to receive a username to be eligible or Login if you are currently a member.

2. Participate
Click Participate in Radio Date and complete the signup form.

3. Listen
We will choose one female member and three male members to participate in an on-air interview on a Wednesday morning with Steve Harvey and the Morning Show crew. The woman will ask the questions and the guys will respond. The woman gets to choose the guy she wants to go out with, and the couple will go on their very own Radio Date™ that weekend. On the following Wednesday, they will call in to the show and let us all know how it went. The following week, we will pick another woman and three other guys and start another Radio Date™.

4. Vote
Everyone can vote and let the woman know who they think she should pick. You don’t need to be a member to vote, so check back each week and vote for the next Radio Date™.

BlackPlanet.com Gives Up On Subscription Model For Dating

15 01 2009

I am not sure when the switch from paying to free was made, but BlackPlanet.com’s dating section is now free. They launched their dating section a few years ago, but frankly, I never felt that they really understood online dating well enough to get it right with a subscription model; they should of hired online dating consultants Mark Brooks or Dave Evans to help them out. Anyway, they have thrown in the towel and the site is now 100% free; probably a good move that will help their bleeding traffic. If you can’t do paid dating right, don’t do it all. Free and paying are very different animals.

Want To Make More Money?

8 01 2009

I recently bought an international calling card for calls to Greece. To my surprise, I was charged $22.50 for what was advertised as a $20 card. Was this a tax, error, etc.? After looking at the fine print more closely *me squinting* I read that the company charges a $2.50 “processing fee”. Slick I say…

Anyway, I wondered if any dating sites do the same. I found one, BlackPeopleMeet. A one month membership is $14.95 and the processing fee is $3.95; quite a clever way of making more money while reaping the benefits of advertising a cheaper membership rate.

Does anyone know of other online businesses, dating or otherwise that charge a “processing fee”?

BlackPeopleMeet.com Meets MySpace

24 05 2008

Black dating site BlackPeopleMeet now has a MySpace application available. Interesting that they are offering this first on MySpace and not Facebook; perhaps they concluded that there are more African Americans using MySpace than Facebook. Their app currently has 1,480 members. Something to keep an eye on…

“Let your friends on MySpace help you Rate a Date with profiles from BlackPeopleMeet.com! Your results will display within your account on BlackPeopleMeet.

Get your friends opinions and let them help you increase your chances to find that special someone!”

Niche Dating – A Crowded Space

30 04 2008

A few years ago, the niche space was the Wild West; a free for all, gold rush if you will, for sites to gain critical mass for their respective niche(s) with little competition. The Black vertical is an example of a lucrative niche that was, a few short years ago, up for grabs. BlackPeopleMeet ran away with it, and now Sparks’ BlackSingles.com is now playing catch up. Years of aggressive cpc bids, little competition and a strong platform has BackPeopleMeet as the leading Black dating community and probably as the major earner in People Media’s portfolio of niche sites.

While there are still opportunities out there for getting in the niche dating game, it’s fast becoming a crowded/competitive space *give me some elbow room pls* with increasingly little that differentiates one site from the next.

Lost Opportunity:

BlackPlanet.com, the leading Black social network that was recently bought by RadioOne (more on this later), really lost out on an excellent opportunity to be the Black dating leader. For starters, they were late launching a dating service (currently called BlackPlanetLove) and secondly, their platform, while improved over time, was clearly not built by seasoned dating industry minded folks. Personally, I would separate their dating section from BlackPlanet.com – less clutter, more focus on dating and better conversions.

Roll Up:

So when are we going to see someone clean up the dating space and do a roll up of leading niche sites? People Media and Spark are two of the largest niche dating players, but I don’t think that they can afford a significant roll up – in fact, both would probably love to be acquired by a larger player. Time will tell…

Life is good!

Zencon = People Media

21 04 2008

The transformation is complete. Niche dating heavyweight Zencon Technologies, acquired by American Capital in 2007, is now “People Media”.

Food for thought. Mike Jones of Userplane/AOL sits on the board of People Media. Any chance that AOL continues its shopping spree and acquires People Media?

Millionaire Matchmaker

27 02 2008

elite meeting

So flying on JetBlue from Cali to DC a few days ago, I did what most JetBlue flyer’s do, watch 5 hours of non stop TV (I am so freakin’ ready for Internet access on JetBlue flights*sigh* Bring it on!). Anyway, as I flipped through the stations, I came across a reality show on Bravo called, “The Millionaire Matchmaker”. The show basically follows matchmaker Patti Stanger as she helps connect wealthy men with the women of their dreams. Man, if you think that you suck at dating, check out the show to see how difficult dating is for some of these millionaires!

While totally entertaining (especially while flying at 36,000 feet) what really caught my attention was to see budding online entrepreneur Tai Lopez and his best friend/biz partner German on the show. Some of you may have met Tai at the last iDate conferences in Spain/Miami. He operates EliteMeeting.com, formerly known as MeetingMillionaires.com. Interestingly enough, they never plug their site on the show (conflict of interest perhaps?).

You can check out a clip of the episode here.
